Here’s a list of all the painful late goals conceded by Unai Emery’s Villarreal in 2021

This is getting ridiculous.

I’m so tired of this. It’s been an unholy number of goals we’ve given up late in 2021, and it’s cost us points in a wide variety of competitions. We should be sitting on four points in the Champions League right now, but instead we have one. We dropped enough late points in La Liga last season to darn near catch Sevilla for fourth place. We lost out of the Copa del Rey on a late goal last year. Seriously, this isn’t bad luck, this is a fundamental issue in this side. I guess we could dig in a little bit and see how many of those matches were we missing this player or that player, but closing out games is really about fundamentals continuing when everyone is tired, and we just do not do that very well at all. Here are all the late goals that have hurt us in 2021, in reverse chronological order. It’s a staggering list.

9/29/21 Cristiano Ronaldo, 95th minute, one point lost. UCL.

9/14/21 Robin Gosens, 83rd minute, two points lost. UCL.

8/29/21 Aissa Mandi OG, 95th minute, two points lost. La Liga

5/22/21 Luka Modric, 92nd minute, one point lost, La Liga

4/21/21 Edgar Mendez, 80th minute, one point lost, La Liga

3/5/21 Carlos Soler, 86th minute, two points lost, La Liga

3/5/21 Goncalo Guedes, 91st minute, the other point lost, La Liga

2/3/21 Roger Marti, 121st minute, knocked out of cup, Copa Del Rey

1/30/21 Alexander Isak, 93rd minute, two points lost, La Liga

Nine different goals in eight different matches. This isn’t normal.
