Villarreal ended up with a very comfortable 4-0 win today before ~4800 FANS!!! FANS!!! at the Ceramica! If you’d only seen the first 20 minutes, you would never have expected this scoreline. Sevilla began brightly and Sergio Asenjo was called on to make several fine saves with the score 0-0.
Major controversy a half-hour in when Diego Carlos caught Gerard’s face with a forearm and received only a yellow.
Shortly after the half-hour mark Villarreal won a corner on the right and Carlos Bacca rose at the far post to power the ball home.
Sevilla had a couple of chances to equalize but Asenjo was equal to them. At the half, Sevilla had most of the possession and chances, Villarreal had the lead.
HT Villarreal 1-0 Sevilla
The game was effectively over within 10 minutes of the restart. A Gerard through ball was latched onto by that man Bacca again, he rounded the keeper and slid the ball home past the despairing Kounde. And five minutes later Sevilla went down to 10 men when Diego Carlos pulled down Yeremy Pino and picked up his second yellow card. Bye-bye!
2-0 up, a man up and half an hour left, and then it was 3-0 minutes later when Gerard latched onto an errant ball form Rakitic and scored from a tight angle. And Bacca completed the scoring from another Sevilla error, this time involving a backpass the keeper wasn’t expecting.
FT Villarreal 4-0 Sevilla
The fans in the stands celebrated, Villarreal players and coaches celebrated. Fine win, the only fly in the ointment was Betis and La Real also won so we need help to finish sixth. Of course, if we win the Europa League final, it won’t matter.
If that ends up being Carlos Bacca’s farewell, how great there were fans to see it. And a nice cameo for Battling Jaume Costa as well.
Endavant!!!
