Following an impressive display against Eibar and Dynamo Kyiv Villarreal continued their winning streak against newly promoted Cadiz with a 2-1 victory.
4th minute in Villarreal’s luck with penalties continued. Parejo’s shot glanced the arm of Jonsson and a penalty was awarded. The home sides’ star man Gerard Moreno stepped up smashing the ball into the back of the net. It seemed a harsh yellow card for a defender doing his job.
Cadiz’s only real chance of the first half came in the 13th minute. Sobrino sent in a corner which Veteran Negredo headed towards the goal. The ball was saved by Asenjo who seemed grateful for something to do.
As expected the remainder of the first half there were very few attempts on goal. Both sides went in at half time with plenty of energy to spare.
The second half became more interesting as both sides seemed to wake up.
In the 67th minute a beautiful overhead pass from Juan Foyth found Gerard clear in space. He calmly squared the ball across the box to a waiting Carlos Bacca. The Columbian did not hesitate and bumbled the ball across into the net making it 2-0.
2 minutes later Cadiz retaliated. In typical Villarreal fashion the side went to sleep after scoring. The ball unluckily rebounded of the back of Mario Gaspar. Cadiz managed to curl the ball in to the box. A free Alex Fernandez placed the ball into the goal making it 2-1.
This was all too familiar territory for Villarreal fans who had their hearts in their mouths. Fans were very relived as the ref blew final whistle without further incident. Worryingly star goal scorer and assist king Gerard Moreno limped off. Fans will be hoping he just needs the international break to recover.
