Villarreal hoped to return to winning ways as they welcome Real Betis to El Ceramica. Sadly wasn't to be as Betis claimed a 2-1 victory.
Betis were clearly the more eager to win the match. It took the Andalusian side until the 45th minute for their first real chance. After a poor defencive header from Albiol. Forward Fekir was shoulder to shoulder with Pau. With a clever turn to shrug of Villarreal star he calmly slid the ball past Asenjo to make it 1-0.
Up until that point the only other registered shot on goal was for Betis in the 12th minute. Veteran Guardado launched a left footed volley from outside the box to fly over the post. Possession wise both sides were equal. It was Betis that went in at half time the happier of the two sides.
Second half only got worse for Villarreal. Yet again the Yellows conceded an early goal just after half time. 52 minutes Sergio Canales curled in a beautiful cross. Asenjo was slow to come out of the box and misjudged the cross. Emerson with a clear header but the ball in the back of the net.
VAR gave Villarreal the faintest bit of hope in the 65th minute. 59 minutes past when Alcacer crossed the ball into the hand of Emerson. It was a very soft decision and took several minutes for VAR to make up its mind. Moreno stepped up to make it 2-1 from the penalty spot.
Emery responded by bringing on Raba, Bacca and Estpuinan making it 4 4 2. Villarreal looked healthier and the attacking spirt of 2004 Pellegrini seemed to return briefly.
Last minute controversy hit Villarreal yet again Pena managed to slide the ball to Raba. Pena was fouled and the Ref blew the whistle. Prior to that Raba had a blasted a shot towards the goal which was deflected into the net. Villarreal players called the goal to be awarded bu the whistle for the freekick had already been given.
Injuries were an aspect but how long can the excuse last now for Emery. Top 4 is now looking very distant. The Yellows with return mid week in the Europa League. Villarreal will be hoping a victory there will raise their sprits again.
