If this particular post actually sees the light of day, it’ll be a minor technological miracle. My internet is used for a live stream every Sunday morning and it was VERY touch and go today and since then it has only gotten worse. When I tried to test drive my ability to stream soccer on the second half of the Valencia match today I couldn’t even get more than a couple of minutes at a time without it crashing, and now I’ve had a red ‘no internet’ bar at the top of our publishing system twice just in this paragraph.
With that in mind, if someone could drop us the lineups in the comments, that would be awesome. I’ll probably try to stream the match on cell phone data somewhere a little later, but with just my phone I won’t be super active on the thread. This one is really pretty simple, both teams need a win rather badly. Real Sociedad won earlier today, moving them two points clear of us. Betis is six points back in 7th, and that makes this match possibly their most crucial of the season so far as they try to get to the Europa League, and here’s why. La Liga gets seven teams into Europe every year. One of those spots is a ticket to the Europa League reserved for the winner of the Copa Del Rey. If the Copa winner is already in the top 6, the 7th best team in the league plays in Europa.
One team not currently in the top six is guaranteed to make the Copa Del Rey final, as Levante and Athletic Club are sitting in 10th and 11th and their tie is currently 1-1 going into the second leg. If the winner of that ties goes on to win the Copa, only the top six places in La Liga will get European places.
A win for Villarreal today would put us 9 points clear of 7th place, which I would feel fantastic about. A loss would bring Betis within 3 points, and a draw would probably just make all of us break something in disgust.
So here’s hoping for a win.
