With Andrés leaving for Huesca and Barbosa not getting renewed, Villarreal needed another choice for the goal. Recently, the stronger rumors have involved txuri-urdin player Gerónimo Rulli, and the deal have been finalized today. He arrives for 5 millions in a four-years deal with an option for a fifth plus one million in variables.
The Argentinian has had two good seasons with the txuri-urdins but recently he was being questioned, and last season he was loaned to Montpellier in the French Ligue 1. Being raised in Estudiantes de La Plata cantera, he left for Uruguayan Maldonado and was later acquired by Manchester City. Currently, his rights were 70% of Real Sociedad, with whom he had a contract until 2022 with a release clause of 40 millions, and 30% of Manchester City. With this deal, Villarreal acquires the 100% in a good deal economical-wise.
His wages were high for Real, but I don’t imagine he will be earning here a lot. There were rumors of him joining Valencia, as his agents had offered him to the chés, and talked about his salary being lower than 3.5, so there’s that bit of info, as wages for Villarreal don’t tend to get too disclosed. He was looking to return to the league, and he gets now the opportunity trying to take the spot from Asenjo, and having good opportunity to make his mark during the Copa del Rey competition, and who knows if he ends even playing a match in the Europa League.
