Yesterday, AS posted yet another article above Villarreal and Juan Foyth. It didn’t have a great amount of detail, I didn’t think much of it. Onda Deportiva had a similar item early yesterday. With no real talk about financial terms, these news pieces seemed mostly based on the fact that Jose Mourinho doesn’t seem to have the player in his plans.
Today, a single emoji happened and it changed my entire thoughts on the likelihood on this story. For some context, on Septempber 14th Javi Mata posted an emoji of the Ecuadorean flag, and two days later we had signed Pervis Estupinan. Few journalists (if any) have better information on Villarreal than Mata, so when that emoji went up, I was confident the left back was in the bag. Here’s what Javi Mata gave us today:

They call the transfer window ‘silly season’, and it certainly is. Part of the reality of silly season is single emojis convincing people more of what’s happening than full length articles, but it’s 2020 and this is the social media world we live in.
To add another piece to this puzzle, Spurs are clearly in for a CB of their own. The global transfer guru that is Fabrizio Romano mentions Milan Skriniar and Antonio Rudiger as targets for THFC. It may be that we have to wait for one of those deals to be done before we get our man, but nonetheless it looks like we are going to get our defender.
I think I’ve talked myself into this deal. I’m encouraged by having another young player in, I think the club is setting a really nice balance between ‘win now’ and ‘prepare for the future’ in their transfer policy, and Foyth will provide us desperately needed depth behind Pau Torres and Raul Albiol. In the next couple of days, hopefully we’ll have that deal done.
