Normally I like a little blurb about the lineups and team selection in these articles but frankly I won’t be at my computer when the game goes live so you will have to bear with me today. This article was written and scheduled in advance.
In other Villarreal news, two cases of COVID-19 at the club have now tested negative and have returned to the group. The club said in their statement “As it has done since the first day of work since the pandemic began, Villarreal CF will continue to strictly comply with LaLiga’s health protocol, as well as all the indications of the relevant health and sports authorities.”
Villarreal’s relatively low key approach to dealing with COVID-19 cases is, I think, becoming the norm in professional sports. There is enough regular testing that clubs can identify quickly who has been infected and can isolate them from non-infected teammates. While this may mean that some players miss competitive matches this season due to COVID-19, it should not lead to a disruption of the season entirely. Ideally, a player missing a match with COVID-19 would not be much different than a player missing a match due to the flu. As companies and governments around the globe work on a vaccine, sport continues to do the best it can.
Speaking of COVID-19, David Silva will not be appearing for Real Sociedad as he has come down with the virus, Mikel Oyarzabal will miss this match as well for the same reason. Oyarzabal’s absence opened the way for Gerard Moreno to get the national team call up we all knew he deserved anyway.
