Villarreal’s need for a center back evident in preseason losses

Villarreal needs to focus on central defense in the transfer market.

Many of you are probably tired of hearing me say we need a center back. Frankly, I’m tired of saying it. But the gap we currently have in this crucial defensive position becomes more and more apparent every time we take the pitch.

Against Tenerife we only started one true CB. Against Valencia Chakla showed us yet again that he simply does not have enough quality for this level. Against Tenerife, Pau had a horror show of a match (he didn’t look great against Valencia either). Raul Albiol turns 35 in a week, and has already gotten a little banged up this preseason. Oh, and Ramiro Funes Mori is recovering from an ankle injury, has COVID-19, and is a bit dicey at the best of times.

The position is a bit of a mess right now, and frankly, we are too talented in too many other areas of the pitch to let this be our achilles (oh, sorry Ramiro) heel this season.

I’ve not been thrilled by some of the links we have had at the position- mostly older inexpensive veterans, but frankly I’d absolutely love anyone who has shown he can compete at a top level right now.

I am never quite sure what makes our comment sections more or less active, but I would love y’alls input on this one. I don’t want to overreact to a dodgy start to the preseason. After all, we all know Pau will be completely fine (he has too much talent not to be), Albiol is excellent and Ramiro is at least a top flight level player, but that’s only three guys I more or less trust and we probably have fifty matches this season. Doesn’t seem like something that will work out well.

What say you?
