It isn’t a surprise to anyone, but Andres Fernandez has completed his move from Villarreal to Huesca, leaving us without a backup goalkeeper. Mariano Barbosa also left this club this window. Fernandez joins Huesca after three years with the Yellow Submarine.

He has been a bit of a journeyman during his career. Starting out at Mallorca before going to Osasuna, this move will be his second stint with Huesca who he joined on loan for the 2010-2011 season. Now, a decade later, he will be a crucial part to their efforts to stay up.

A few of the youth keepers have been tried out in the preseason so far, but I don’t consider it very likely that they are relied on to be the second choice. That makes it likely that goalkeeper is likely to be our top transfer priority at the moment, which is troubling considering our CB issues.

Speaking of CB, in addition to dealing with his achilles issue, Funes Mori has, reportedly, tested positive for COVID-19. Coming off an injury already, this is certainly going to disrupt his preparations for the season. Even if you are convinced that Funes Mori has the ability to be our third CB (I don’t love the idea), the broken start to his new campaign is certainly going to compromise his ability to be at his best.

As we work on the close of our preseason and get ready for the new campaign starting mid September, I’d like to see these squad issues resolved quickly. We have the potential to do great things this year, and I don’t want that hampered by an ill-timed injury at keeper or CB.
