It’s worth noting that Jaume Costa at positions besides LB seem to be options Unai Emery is giving significant thought to. Costa only played on the right four times last season and has only played there eight times in his career, per Transfermarkt. He has never played CB. Looking at this lineup, one of Pena, Alberto, or Costa will be stepping inside, which of course further underlines our need for another CB.

After pairing with Coquelin last match, Parejo will start out with Iborra today. We would all assume that Parejo is starting in Emery’s pivot, but which DM will be his partner once meaningful matches start in a few weeks?

Kubo gets his first start in yellow. He looked excellent last match and I look forward to seeing him here. His positioning will be interesting, with Fer and Gerard both on the pitch, he will either be a wide midfielder if we return to the 442 from the Cartagena match or we will see Gerard on the right with Kubo either as a 10 or on the left wing. I personally want a good long look at him on the left.

Chakla looked much more comfortable last match than I’ve seen him, but as the only true CB in the lineup to start today he will certainly face a much bigger test. I absolutely do not believe in his ability given our goals for this year, but I know others disagree with me on that, so we will watch him with great interest today.

I hope we play well, and more importantly, hope every stays safe today. Endavant Villarreal!
