Villarreal today announced the signing today of Coquelin on a 4 year deal. The majority of Villarreal will welcome this considering there hasn’t been a solid a defencive midfielder since Rodri/ Bruno pre injuries. Last year this was evident as neither Zambo or Iborra could provide the defencive discipline needed. This will free up our more attacking minded players from defending and provide the wings backs protection when pressing forward.
Despite playing time Coquelin is not afraid of tackle. He rarely strays past the half way line which is what you need from a cdm. After stints in the Premier league with Arsenal, he will bring that much need physicality to Villarreal. Soon to be announced and providing he is regular starter he will form a formidable partnership with Parejo.
There were questions about age and injuries but for Villarreal fans this is a really good signing. He won’t be snapped up the moment he shows promise like Rodri. Providing he can stay fit he will be with the Yellow submarine for a good few years.
The role of a CDM largely goes unrecognised. It is not until the end of the season that your commitment and the role within the team is truly recognised. You won’t be getting a Kante like player but a solid midfielder who will provide protection to the CBS
Looks like 13 million for both Coquelin and Parejo with 8 Million for the latter. For me this looks like the deal of the century. Credit to who ever secured this deal it is exactly what Villarreal needed. It is not a direct replacement for any player as Villarreal currently don’t have CDM. With Parejo also playing CDM before it maybe be between the 2 fighting for the CDM role who knows?
He has 89 appearances with Valencia, scoring once and providing three assists. These are the stats I like to see as CDM. Welcome Coquelin!
