Not all transfer rumours are created equal, and Villarreal being interested in Takefusa Kubo is one of them. The radio show for Onda Cero has said that Real Betis lead the way for a loan of the young attacker, while Real Sociedad, Villarreal, and Granada are all interested.
Realistically, with a new relatively high profile manager and a whole in our attack created by the departure of Santi Cazorla, this is the new normal for a while. We’ll be linked with a lot of attacking talent over the next couple of weeks until we actually start putting some concrete signings down. In the meantime, I would rate this one actually occurring as ‘extremely unlikely’.
Kubo marks the second young Real Madrid owned attacker that we’ve been linked with, and honestly, he may be the better open play player of the two, but we are far more likely to end up with Oscar. I won’t go very deep into the metrics on this one, but if you want to see their output compared at a glance, here ya go.

Villarreal has traditionally been quiet in transfer windows, with their biggest moves (like the one for Paco in January) coming as a relative surprise. With our return to Europe and the new manager, we are a hot item in the rumor mill. Everyone will want to be the first to identify who the next big signing will be. If you’re an experienced Villarreal fan on social media, you’ll know who the reliable people are. There’s not too much reason to get worked up until they start chattering.
For what it’s worth, if my options were strictly ‘loan in Kubo or buy Oscar’, I’d rather loan in Kubo, but I don’t think either player is good enough to be a starter at Villarreal at this point in their careers.
