It’s official—just announced—Javi Calleja is out as manager of Villarreal.
Whatever one thinks of the move, no question that with Calleja’s departure and the hiring of Unai Emery, Villarreal is making a bold move that one wouldn’t have imagined happening last summer, for instance.
Calleja leaves Villarreal with a record in all competitions of 57 wins, 30 draws and 44 losses.
He replaced Fran Escribá as coach in September 2017 and brought Villarreal to a fifth-place finish (61 points, 10 behind 4th place); 2018-19 we struggled and finished 14th (Calleja was fired and then rehired in there of course), and this year we finished 5th again, 60 points, 10 behind 4th place.
