Villarreal fans got something to cheer about today—Manu Morlanes and Villarreal defeated Carlos Soler and Valencia 4-2 in the FIFA 20 tournament going on today. It was an exciting match; Villarreal dominated possession early but flubbed a couple of chances to score, while Valencia also forced fine saves from Sergio Asenjo.
Villarreal took the lead halfway through the first period with a fine goal from Gerard. A second goal was mysteriously waved off, leading twitter wags to joke that Gil Manzano was in the VAR booth. At the half, it was still 1-0.
The second half was a different story, with far more goals. Morlanes took off Paco Alcacer and brought on Carlos Bacca, to more twitter comment.....and Bacca promptly scored a goal! Villarreal maintained the lead throughout, 2-0, 2-1, 3-1, 3-2; and then Gerard completed his hat trick with about 5 minutes to go, resulting in the 4-2 final score.
Next up is Marco Asensio and Real Madrid. I have a feeling Asensio is a pretty good FIFA 20 player, so it’ll be a tough matchup.
Sadly and ridiculously, Barcelona and Mallorca forfeited, claiming they have sponsorship agreements with another video game manufacturer. Oh well.
