An update on a tough weekend for Villarreal Women

Are hopes of promotion lost?

Villarreal CF femenino twitter

Villarreal A had a bad match against Cordoba, which saw them lose 0-1. Sanjuan (GK), Palo, Sheila Guijarro, Aixa Salvador, Celia, Bea Prades, Iris Domínguez, Cristina Díaz, Sara Medina, Lara Mata and Albeta started the match with Pau (GK), Marieta, Silvia, M. Colonques, Jessi, Vera Rico and Teresa waiting in the wings.

Villarreal had an early chance to score but the goalkeeper made a great save. From there, a very technical and tactical match where nobody could come close to the area. That changed with a set piece by Cordoba and Sofia Melchor with a great shot beat Sanjuan to take the lead at almost the half hour mark.

Second half, Villarreal started with more energy and got an early chance with a set piece by Sara Medina hitting the post. As time went on, Cordoba got a bit more of ball and got some good chances to get more distance at the scoreboard. At minute 71, Vera Rico subbed in marking her debut with the A team for the U16 player. At injury time, another Villarreal shot hit the crossbar, but no luck. The 3 points fly to Cordoba.

Fortunately, even though we lost, both Santa Teresa and Fundación Albacete did as well, so they didn’t gain any ground on us, but still, 10 points (7 if we win against Collerense) are a lot of points right now if we want to get promoted, but we will see.

Villarreal B had this week to rest a bit more, so didn’t play, and their next match is this coming Sunday against Mislata CF. Villarreal C hosted CD FB La Eliana in a very important match for the promotion towards Autonómica. Sadly, they drew them. They fell behind because of a goal from La Eliana in the 20th minute but goals from Marta Ortells and Andrea Gonzalez put Villarreal ahead. At injury time, La Eliana sacored again to make it 2-2 to complete the result. Who knows if having Vera Rico on the field would have made a difference

Nothing changed at the top. Drac got a win so now it’s closer, same for Tavernes Blanques and Torre Levante. Now you hope for La Eliana to lose points, which at this level can be actually near impossible.

Villarreal infantil-cadete got a win by 0-3 against Castellón to keep themselves at the top of the table in a league season which would weird if it to not end at their trophy cabinet.

To end it, Villarreal base got a huge win by 7-0 against Castellón, in another league title that should happen. In other news, Aixa Salvador has been called up for Spain U20. We’re still hoping for promotions for our women’s teams and offer them all our support as we head towards the finals stretch of the season!
