Unai Emery has, objectively, been pretty good since coming to Villarreal. His hard work has resulted in 19 straight matches unbeaten for the Yellow Submarine, including 13 in La Liga, 5 in the Europa League, and our opener in the Copa Del Rey. The thing about football, though, is that ‘unbeaten’ doesn’t necessarily equate to a winning streak.
We have ten wins and nine draws, which is why we sit in fourth place instead of having separated ourselves from most of our La Liga competition. All three of the teams directly behind us in the table have played fewer matches, and two of them would be on level or better if they won their games in hand.
So the question for Villarreal fans is, how do we feel about our man Emery to this point? There are points dropped that we regret: Huesca, Cadiz, Elche, and Betis stick out to me, but the situation in La Liga right now is where nearly everyone can tell a similar story. Scoring is down across the league and no one outside the city of Madrid is averaging over two points a match.
There’s a long way to go this season, and we will be missing our starting holding midfielder the rest of the way. It remains to be seen if we can finish top four or how far we’ll go in the Europa League, but so far I rate Emery’s tenure very highly.
I’m curious as to how our readers feel. I’ll drop a poll (or try to) at the bottom of this article and you tell me how you rate Emery out of ten, ten being the best. (You may need to be on a laptop to see the poll.)
