Villarreal signs Tottenham defender on loan with buy option

Juan Foyth rounds out a great window for Unai Emery’s side.

The deal for Juan Foyth has been made official. Tottenham Hotspur extended his contract to 2023, while the loan to Villarreal has a 15m buy clause. Tottenham extended his contract just in case we do not execute the buy option. As it stood before, his contract would run out one year after the end of his loan to Villarreal, and that would make it harder for them to recoup money on him. Extending things for another year covers Spurs financially even if we do not choose to take up our option.

Foyth completes a really great summer window for Villarreal. He and Jorge Cuenca, bought from Barcelona, are CB options for the future as Raul Albiol gets towards the end of his career. Pervis Estupinan is the future of the left back position as he has a seven year deal, and Francis Coquelin and Dani Parejo gave the midfield much needed immediate help in both talent and depth. Take Kubo coming in on loan allowed us to find somewhere for Javi Ontiveros to get regular minutes this season, and overall I think the club have struck a fine balance between planning for the future and being ready to win in the present.

Foyth has been called up with the Argentine national team and therefore will not immedately join training. That said, this deal occurring as we head into the international break still gives Unai Emery time to decide how the player- who can also play some right back, will fit into his side.

Welcome Juan!
