Villarreal will not travel to Azerbaijan

UEFA is asking Qarabag to come up with an alternate venue for their “home” match.

UEFA today announced that European matches involving club sides from Armenia and Azerbaijan can’t take place in those countries due to the ongoing security issues in Nagorno-Karabakh. That means that Villarreal’s match against Qarabag, scheduled to take place in Baku, Azerbaijan on October 29, will need to be moved.

It’s up to the Azerbaijan Football Federation, working with Qarabag, to find a new site. I believe a recent Nations League match was moved to Tirana, Albania, so it could be that’s where we’ll go (which would be considerably closer than Baku, about 1500 miles closer!). Wherever it is, there’s not a lot of time to find a new site.
