Villarreal Women win once again

Team pushes for a promotion chance.

The Villarreal women’s team is absolutely unstoppable right now, with this week’s victims being Valencia B. There were an astounding eight goals in this competition, with the result being a 5-3 win for the Yellow Submarine. We now sit fourth, three games out of third place and a game in hand on both Granada above us and Malaga below us.

Sheila Guijarro opened the scoring for los groguetes in the 28th minute before the game was drawn level two minutes later by Valencia player Carol. That scoreline continued for most of the match until Aixa Salvador continued her striking form from the national team youth setup with a 66th minute goal and Sheila gained her brace four minutes later.

Valencia pulled one back to make it 3-2 with 18 minutes of regular time remaining, plenty of time to find an equalizer. Fortunately, it wasn’t to be as Lara Mata scored in the 74th minute and Nazaret Segura finished things off in the 88th minute.

In their last five games the Villarreal Women have four wins and a draw and their next match is an absolutely crucial one on the road against Granada that will have a profound impact on the chase for promotion. Some clubs in Spain buy their way into the women’s first tier but here at Villarreal we are building it through a strong academy and the same principles that have made our men’s first team so successful in recent years.

In one closing note, our great photo provider (understandably) doesn’t have a lot of photos from the women’s second divison in Spain. My hope is to have some photos we have the rights to use for future articles, in the meantime, apologies for using the same flag image multiple times. One way or another, things will improve on the photo and access fronts once we reach the top tier.

UPDATE: Got us a photo. The club is really good to us.
