Round of 16 Copa Del Rey Draw Results- Villarreal CF at Rayo Vallecano

Villarreal CF are in the last 16 of the Copa Del Rey. With just ten La Liga teams left, this is the part where I (probably unwisely) start getting my hopes up just a little bit. This morning (lunch time there) they had the Copa Del Rey Draw for the next round.

Villarreal have drawn Rayo Vallecano, who defeated Real Betis on penalties in the last round. Rayo is only one year removed from being in La Liga themselves. It is not the easiest draw we could have had but every expectation should be that we reach the last eight in the competition, anything less will be a disappointment.

Other draw results:

Badajoz vs Granada

Leonesa vs Valencia

CD Tenerife vs Athletic Club

Real Zaragoza vs Real Madrid

Mirandes vs Sevilla

FC Barcelona vs Leganes

Real Sociedad vs Osasuna

Outside of our own match, the most intriguing matchup of the round is probably Sociedad vs Osasuna. Even then, this is a round that shapes up to separate the bigger clubs from the rest, as there are only two matchups that pair La Liga teams on both sides of the draw. Barring upsets, that would make the round of eight an absolute gauntlet with the potential for an all La Liga round and four teams in European places currently in contention. Remember, for 7th place in La Liga to proceed to Europe, someone in places 1-6 would need to win the Copa del Rey.

Good luck to everyone in the next round (not you, Rayo) and enjoy this wonderful tournament.
