The top Villarreal women’s team is preparing to undertake a new challenge—they begin play in the new Primera B Division next month. The division is divided into north and south sections, and the “Femi-Submarine” will be in the southern group, and will be racking up the travel miles. The 16 teams include a number in the Canary Islands as well as Andalusia.
The women’s preseason featured a surprise trip to the COTIF tournament, which is a tourney for both men’s and women’s Under-20 sides that took place in L’Alcudia earlier this month. Originally the women’s under-20 national side from Equatorial Ginea was supposed to attend, but they had to pull out due to visa concerns, and Villarreal were drafted in at short notice to take their place.
Our team did very well, making it all the way to the final and coming up short against Spain’s national U-20 side, 1-0. It was a bit unusual given that one of our star players, Aixa Salvador, was starting for Spain! Villarreal actually had the better of the play for long periods but the Spanish keeper, Maria López, was the star of the show.
The women were in action Wednesday with a friendly against Mislata (a 4-1 victory for us) and face Zaragona on Sunday in another friendly. Endavant!!!
