Villarreal took another large step towards survival in the Primera with a 1-0 away win at the Anoeta over Real Sociedad. This was not a game to remember, except for the final result and one magical left-footed cross from the magician himself, Santi Cazorla. The 20,000 in attendance saw the home team dominate possession (65%-35%), dominate in shots (13-8) but only three of those were on target for each side.

There wasn’t a lot of action in the first half, as the two defenses were able to negate the attack; Coach Calleja brought on Gerard Moreno for Carlos Bacca at the break, and it was Gerard who scored the only goal of the game with five minutes left (not a lot had happened in the half before then, either). After a corner kick the ball was worked to Santi who crossed from the right and Gerard headed past Rulli. Villarreal could have had a second goal shortly after but Fornals’ shot from the top of the box could only find the keeper.

There were only two minutes of injury time (and the referee blew right on the stroke of two minutes, prompting whistles from the home crowd).

Santi Cazorla clearly MoTM again, Funes Mori continued his good play of late, Gerard excellent for the goal of course. Pretty much everyone else did OK though Bacca and Toko Ekambi were a bit off. Credit to Alvaro who had one of his better games, and Quintillá looked good as well. Only bad thing was Iborra picking up a yellow card which rules him out of the next match.

Next up, Huesca on Sunday: a win there puts us on 42 points and surely that will be enough! Endavant!!
