Villarreal 2-1 Leganés: Ekambi and Bacca on target for the Submarine

We’re not safe yet, but we’re a lot closer after today

Villarreal defeated Leganés 2-1 today—the third straight year in which the Submarine has prevailed by that scoreline in the 33rd match of their league season. This time after a scoreless first half in which Villarreal looked the more dangerous (and had a goal waved off for offside) Carlos Bacca gave us the lead just past the hour mark; Quintillá’s cross was headed goalward by Toko Ekambi, Cuellar stopped it but Bacca was there for the rebound. Ekambi doubled it with 10 minutes remaining.

Of course, Villarreal couldn’t stand prosperity, as it were, and Alvaro Gonzalez’s challenge in the box resulted in a penalty kick which El Zhar converted with three minutes remaining, but Villarreal held firm.

36 points now, four ahead of 18th and with a match against Real Sociedad away on Thursday. Endavant!
