Villarreal fans in Russia celebrate
Villarreal CF

Less than a week after suffering a home defeat to Alavés, Villarreal recovered in fine style, defeating Zenit St. Petersburg 3-1 in front of a home crowd of 50,000 in their impressive stadium.

Given that it was Zenit who had the tall striker, a bit surprising Villarreal scored two head goals! Iborra scored the first, from a headed cross by Funes Mori, Gerard the second, from an excellent Fornals cross. Morlanes arrowed a third goal to give Villarreal a comfortable margin of victory.

This was Zenit’s first home loss in the Europa League in 24 games (21 wins and 2 draws before now). Wow.
