Not losing, but not winning either.

Atletico Baleares have opened up a six-point lead at the top of the Segunda B, Group 4 following their win over Espanyol’s B team today. Villarreal B could only draw 0-0 against a very defensive Ontinyent at the Mini Estadí, so at the moment (with eight games remaining in the regular season) the playoff spots are currently held by Atletico Baleares 57, Villarreal B 51, Herculés 50, Cornellá 49, with Lleida Esportiu behind on 47 and Espanyol B on 43. In all probability the top four finishers will come from those six.

Remember too that the way the playoffs work, the four group winners are drawn against each other with the winners of those two matches taking two of the promotion spots, the losers fall into the secondary playoff that may get them promotion—after three more rounds.

Since losing to Hercules on January 19, Villarreal B have only one win, seven draws, and one loss in their last nine matches. Those draws haven’t been without incident: Alcoyano drew even with the last kick of the match, while we came back late in successive weeks against Peralada and Conquense to earn a point. One interesting aspect of the schedule next week is that Atletico Baleares are the only one of the frontrunners playing at home, so they should add to their cushion against some of the teams below them.

Villarreal C lost 2-3 at home to Paterna, their third loss in a row. They’re still seven points above the relegation playoff zone, but are now far away from promotion playoff contention. Next weekend they’re away to Crevillente, currently fifth and with four wins in a row.
