“If we just keep drawing against the teams above us in the table we can move ahead of them”, said NO ONE, EVER. And that is Villarreal’s problem as another game day comes and goes with no victory. Should we draw our next 15 matches (hey, it could happen!) we will end up with 35 points, which is, of course, not enough.
Today against Valladolid was more of the same, though for once a draw was probably the correct result. Neither team had many shots on goal, neither team really got out of second gear. Even Santi Cazorla seemed subdued today.
Valladolid dominated the first 25 minutes or so, Villarreal came into it more after that, but Masip’s save on Alfonso Pedraza was maybe our best chance. As the match moved on Calleja went to a 4-3-3 in search of a goal, but that didn’t really produce anything. A couple of dangerous freekicks for Valladolid didn’t result in a goal either, and the match ended as it had started, 0-0.
For those looking for positives, this was our first clean sheet in a month (since the match at Eibar)—we have only six all season, and four of them came in our first six matches! But apart from that, there wasn’t much to cheer about.
It’s now 10 matches in the league without a win, and next up are Sevilla at home and Atletico Madrid away. Hope springs eternal.
MOM: Daniele Bonera, for his clearance in the 7th minute (actually he played OK the rest of the time, too).
