On the pitch, it was a mixed weekend for our cantera. Villarreal C drew their match, but VIllarreal B won an exciting game at Cornellá, 2-1. Edu Espiau had put the Yellows into the lead before the home side equalized. With injury time beckoning, Sergio Lozano scored the winner.
It’s going to be a very competitive season in our group, if that wasn’t already clear. Surprise team FC Andorra, newly promoted, are on 17 points, along with Villarreal and Lleida Esportiu. Lleida have been in the Segunda B for eight years now and have never finished lower than 8th, failing in the playoffs three times). Next Saturday we will host Lleida.
Sabadell, Castellón, and Barcelona B are next (15, 14 and 14 points respectively). The big surprise so far has been Herculés, who were in the playoffs last season. They currently are on four points, 18th in the table.
Some of you may be wondering—what happened to Atletico Baleares, who topped our group last time but missed out on promotion. The answer is they switched groups (there are always some teams that have to switch because of geography when the promotion/relegation playoffs are done and the next year is planned). Baleares now play in Group I—which features mostly teams from Madrid and the north, plus Las Palmas B and Melilla. It isn’t hurting them much, because they top the table and fellow islanders Ibiza are second!
The Villarreal women’s side suffered their first loss of the season, going down 2-1 to Pozoalbense. It was a tough week for the early leaders, actually, as three of the top four teams in the table lost. Albacete are tops now, with 12 points, with Villarreal equal on points. Another tough match beckons next week with an early Sunday game at Córdoba, currently fourth.
Off the pitch now, and news (or at least rumors) that Premier League clubs are already ‘tracking’ Pau Torres. Arsenal, Manchester City, and Chelsea are said to be interested. He’s just signed a much improved contract so I expect this is all fluff at the moment. As for Pau, we may see him play for Spain on Tuesday against Sweden; he wasn’t in the team last time.
Endavant!
