Villarreal’s second team (which only is in the Segunda B because the first team was relegated in 2012, so they had to move down a level) is leading its group by a point over Lleida Esportiu, and the two of them meet at the Sports City in Vila-real tomorrow.
When the teams met to open the season in Lleida, the home side won 2-1, scoring twice in the first 35 minutes and playing down a man for the last 40. Samu Chukwueze started and played all of that game for us.
If you tune in (the match is being broadcast live by Villarreal TV, so go to the official website and click on the blinking “LIVE” to watch it) you’ll see some familiar faces among the opposition.
The most obvious is Juan Oriol. The Cambrils native was Villarreal property from 2008 to 2013. Juan Carlos Garrido saw him as the heir apparent to Juan Capdevila’s left-back position, but it didn’t quite work out. Well-traveled since we released him, he’s in his first season with Lleida.
Tano Bonnin is another ex-Villarreal man—he played for the B team in 2014-15 and is a Dominican Republic international. He’s in his first season with Lleida as well, can play right back or centerback.
And then there is Juan Ortuño, aka Juanto. Remember him? He scored 18 goals for our B team back in 2012-13, 13 the year following, but for whatever reason we didn’t see enough in him to keep him around. And subsequent events seem ot have borne that out: he’s scored goals galore in the Segunda B, but brief appearances in the Segunda, and with Belenenses in Portugal, haven’t led to much.
And finally, though he has never been a Villarreal player, some of you might recall Marc Trilles. He was playing for Castellón when Villarreal were relegated in 2012, and celebrated with a number of inappropriate and insulting comments on social media. He leads their team in yellow cards with eight, so clearly hasn’t learned how to behave:)
