Gonzalo Melero’s future could be with Villarreal

As had been widely reported during the summer, Villarreal has been interested in 24 year-old midfielder Gonzalo Melero, currently with Huesca. He scored 16 goals last season to help lead them to promotion, and now Villarreal have reached an agreement whereby we can sign him after July 1st next year for €5m.

It’s a little different than a purchase and loan back because the purchase is not mandatory—we simply have the option to purchase his contract—but it’s the same inasmuch as Huesca retain his services for the season and we get to see how he does against Primera opposition.

Melero came up in the Real Madrid system but moved to Ponferradina in 2015-16 and Huesca for the last two seasons. He is reportedly a fine passer of the ball and has scored a lot of headed goals for the Aragon side.
