The town of Vila-real has been the place to be for fans of the beautiful game in Spain this week. The La Liga Promises tournament (for U-12’s) has taken place, with Bareclona defeating Espanyol in the final (Villarreal, after winning their group, lost to Espanyol in the quarterfinals).
And this evening Spanish time, La Furia Roja make a rare appearance at the Ceramica, taking on Switzerland in a friendly, their last before departing for Russia and the World Cup. How rare? The last time was June 5, 1999—Spain defeated San Marino 9-0 in a qualifying match for Euro 2000, with ex-Barca boss Luis Enrique scoring a hat trick.
It’s the last chance for Villarreal fans to see Rodri before he puts on the Atleti colors, and the last time to see Andrés Iniesta on Spanish soil, probably.
Villarreal B, of course, will be in action next weekend, so football won’t be over in Vila-real quite yet, even after today!
