Updating the rumor mill:
Denis Cheryshev’s fine opening game did not go unrecognized; apparently Liverpool, Everton, and Manchester United fans, if not the front office, were filling the internet urging their respective clubs to “forget everyone else, just sign him!” Hey, Gary Neville says he’s perfect for English football, so....
Will something happen? Probably, given that we have Alfonso Pedraza waiting in the wings (sorry, I’ll be here all week), Chery would probably move somewhere that could offer him a lot of playing time (not necessarily Liverpool or Manchester United...) and Villarreal would probably be happy to cash in. No idea what his release clause is, but I would expect €20-30m.
Nicola Sansone is attracting attention—now Inter Milan is showing some interest, though no money figures were revealed (no, we don’t want Eder).
And are we interested in Pedro Mba Obiang? Rumors are yes, and so is Fiorentina. Obiang is a strong defensive midfielder and an excellent tackler, but he is coming back from a serious injury. €18-20m seems rather a lot for him given that.
As far as players available on a free transfer, Hatem Ben Arfa is an attacking midfielder we are allegedly interested in (as are Sevilla, Valencia, and Betis, who seem to be the other La Liga clubs interested in every player we are if you believe the rumor mill). He didn’t play at all last year for Paris Saint-Germain but was a star for Nice a couple of years back.
And speaking of free transfers, FYI, Portuguese internatinoal goalkeeper Rui Patricio, one of the Sporting Lisbon players who declared himself a free agent after recent events there, has signed with Wolves. Expect them to grab a few more Portuguese players given their extensive ties with Mendes, etc.
