Villarreal’s Europa League chances take a dent with Sevilla win

Two matches left, and Villarreal could still miss out on Europe after a poor performance against Barcelona was duly punished (5-1), while Real Madrid only showed up for the last 10 minutes against Sevilla, losing 3-2.

With two matches to go, then, the EL positions look like this:

Betis 59 home to Sevilla; away to Leganés

Villarreal 57 away to Depor; home to Real Madrid

Sevilla 54 away to Betis; home to Alavés

Getafe 52 home to Atleti; away to Malaga

Since Villarreal would lose a tiebreak with Sevilla, or with Getafe, Villarreal need a point to guarantee seventh place; the Submarine can’t guarantee better than that unless Betis defeat Sevilla, in which case that point would guarantee sixth.

Should Sevilla win, we could end up with a table where Betis are on 62, Sevilla are on 60, and Villarreal are on 58, 59, or 60—in which case we’d still be seventh.

No one played well yesterday but at least none of the players one yellow card away from suspension picked up one either.
