Villarreal B guaranteed a playoff spot after win today

Could still (technically) finish first, but...

Villarreal’s second team celebrating after today’s win

Villarreal’s B team easily dispatched bottom side Deportivo Aragon 4-1 today (the opponents are Zaragona’s reserve team). That win means that the mini-submarine is guaranteed a playoff spot, likely second place in our group but possibly third.

Mallorca failed to wrap up first, losing 1-0 at Sabadell, but while technically we could still finish first, it’s not likely, seeing as Mallorca host the same Deportivo Aragon in their last match.

It’s currently Mallorca 67; Villarreal B 62; Elche 58 (yet to play Lleida today), Cornella 54. That final playoff place is really up for grabs with Ebro (53), Badalona (52), Ontinyent (52), and Lleida (51) with a shot, and if Valencia’s B team win today at Olot, they will have 50 points.

Meanwhile, Getafe and Girona played to a classic ‘draw that suits neither team’ this morning, an early Amath goal canceled out by a Stuani penalty, while Molina missed a penalty for Getafe, who played the entire second half with ten men after Damian Suarez was sent off.

That result leaves Getafe on 49 points: maximum possible is 58, and their remaining matches are Las Palmas (A), Atletico Madrid (H), and Malaga (A).

Girona are on 48, maximum possible now 57, and their remaining matches are Eibar (H), Valencia (H), and Las Palmas (A).

Sevilla are also on 48, but have a new coach—Jokin Caparrós—and a game in hand. Their remaining matches are Real Sociedad (H), Real Madrid (H), Betis (A), and Alaves (H).

Villarreal are on 54 points now, realistically need another win to guarantee a European spot. Remaining matches are Valencia (H), Barcelona (A), Depor (A), and Real Madrid (H). Endavant!!!
