Segunda B update: Villarreal B still in second place

Possible playoff opponents are.....

With three remaining matches, now seems like a good time to look at the current standings in the four Segunda B groups.

As a reminder, the team finishing first in each group has an easier road to promotion—the four first-place teams are drawn against one another, the two winners are promoted, the two losers go through a repechage (look it up) which gives them another chance at promotion.

Second place teams are drawn against fourth, third against each other, the winners of those matches have to win two more matches to gain promotion. Current teams in promotion places are:

Group 1: Rayo Majadahonda 65; Deportivo Fabril 62; Fuenlabrada 59; Celta Vigo B 57.

Group 2: Sporting Gijon B 71; Mirandes 69; Real Sociedad B 65; Racing Santander 65.

Group 3: Mallorca 67; Villarreal B 59; Elche 58; Cornella 53.

Group 4: Cartagena 66; Marbella 64; Real Murcia 62; Extramadura 54.

Since we can’t be drawn against a team in our own group, our choices are (if things don’t change) Celta B, Racing Santander, or Extramadura. I would personally prefer the last team.

As far as relegation to the Tercera is concerned, there are a bunch of B teams in danger, including those of Cordoba, Las Palmas, Betis, Osasuna and Valladolid.

Note also that Sporting Gijon is currently in an automatic promotion spot from the Segunda to the Primera. If that changes, so that Gijon’s first team is going through the promotion playoffs at the same time their second team is going through their promotion playoffs, a level down, I am not sure how that is resolved. I assume if the first team were to be defeated, the second team (if still active) would be removed from the playoffs since first and second teams can’t play in the same division, but I don’t know how the timing would work.
