Villarreal 2-1 Leganés: a needed win

And a three-point lead over Sevilla in seventh.

The Yellow Submarine kept alive its quest for a Europa League spot with a 2-1 win over Leganés before one of our smallest crowds of the season at the Ceramica.

Villarreal dominated play (17 shots to 6) but only took the lead shortly before the halftime interval, Victor Ruiz scoring off a corner kick, courtesy of a Mario Gaspar headed pass. Villarreal looked to have put the game beyond the visitors shortly before the hour mark when Carlos Bacca scored a screamer from outside the box, but as frequently has happened, the Yellows couldn’t stand prosperity, and Lega scored with eight minutes left to make it interesting. However, Villarreal’s defense survived the remaining time for a 2-1 win, fully deserved in the circumstances.

Calleja’s 4-2-3-1 lineup was much as we expected, with Rukavina replacing suspended Jaume Costa, and Dani Raba between Chery and Casti in the threesome behind lone striker Bacca.

MoM: Whoscored says Bacca, from comments on the gamethread I’m going to say Raba, Mario or Cheryshev all have good claims as well.

Now we have a week and a half off before we host Celta—another must-win game for us.

Europa League spots: Betis 52 (game in hand; host Las Palmas Thursday), VILLARREAL 51, Sevilla 48, Girona 44 (at Alavés Thursday), Celta 44.
