Villarreal cantera roundup: B team draws, C team wins, ladies lose

Villarreal B drew 1-1 with Mallorca on Sunday; an early goal from Dario Poveda gave us the lead but a penalty goal before the break evened things. Mallorca could have had a player sent off for a second yellow early in the second half—that seemed to be the main talking point afterwards. Current standings are:

Mallorca 58, Villarreal B 50, Elche 48, Cornellà 48, Lleida Esportiu 44, Badalona 43. Top four get to promotion playoffs.

Villarreal C, meanwhile, won at Xàtiva 2-0 and are now 8th on 46 points, 6 away from the promotion places. The big match in the group was Levante B versus Castellón—it finished 1-1 and both teams are on 63 points, Orihuela are just behind on 61.

The Villarreal women’s side lost to CFF Albacete 2-0. Disappointing after three straight wins, but so it goes. There are five matches left in the season; we are 9th of 14 (bottom three go down). The bottom two teams have hardly any points but the third from bottom still has to play each of them—we don’t. If we can pick up two wins in the last five matches, we’ll be fine, It’s been a year of rebuilding for the women, but the Villarreal management has said our real goal is the national women’s Primera.
