Javi Calleja has been relieved of his duties as first-team manager following our latest home loss to Celta. Even the 8-0 drubbing of Almeria wasn’t enough to keep his job, because the signs were plain to see that not only had Calleja had lost the fanbase, he was apparently losing the dressing room as well, judging by the uninspired play of much of the team.
Word is that Luis Garcia Plaza, who coached the B team briefly in 2005-06 and has La Liga experience with Levante and Getafe, will be taking over, but not confirmed as yet.
Sr. Calleja was promoted quickly—too quickly, evidently, and hopefully he can move to another coaching position and prove himself. It just didn’t come together here; like Fran Escriba, he did a good job taking over a team, but didn’t prove capable of building one and instilling his philosophy. We wish him all the best in his future endeavors.
