In a largely forgettable match, Villarreal and Rapid Vienna drew 0-0 today. This result, coupled with Spartak’s 4-3 win over Rangers, move the Submarine to the top of the group on 6 points, with Rangers and Spartak on 5 and Rapid on 4.
Yet again, it was the gang that couldn’t shoot straight that manned the Yellow Submarine. Dani Raba and Nicola Sansone had chances in the first 20 minutes to score but were denied by the keeper.
Unfortunately after about 30 minutes Villarreal were...not so good. Rapid created some opportunities themselves, but were unable to penetrate our net.
The match looked to be petering out quietly but in injury time first Santi Cazorla drilled a shot narrowly wide of the post that would have given Villarreal the win, then as the match concluded, we had an opportunity blocked on the line.
So, 0-0 it ended. Amazingly enough, we’re head of the group now, but as so often we’ve found this season, three points were there for the taking, and we did not grab them.
And, Daniele Bonera, just recovered from injury, was injured again. Any chance he could just retire to the coaching staff (you’ll remember he took courses this summer for his badge) and we could pick up a fourth centerback in January?
Man of the match: I have no idea, but Whoscored said Mario Gaspar, followed by Pedraza.
A lot of negativity on twitter, which isn’t helping anyone. Keep the faith, guys. Together we can, as the banner says. But if we don’t win at Rayo on Sunday....
