Wow, that was quick. Barely a week ago it looked as though Rúben Semedo would be leaving Lisbon for England, likely Newcastle United. But now, Villarreal have swooped in and done the deal.
It will be officially announced tomorrow and the terms are not precisely known, but word is Villarreal have paid €14m for him, Sporting will get 20% of any transfer, and Semedo will sign a five-year deal, presumably with a release clause somewhere in the €50m range.
It’s good business for Sporting Lisbon, certainly, while Villarreal supporters have to be excited about this signing. Semedo is tall, good in the air, but is also athletic, fast, and reads the game well. Rather reminiscent of Eric Bailly, if you ask me.
Semedo has confirmed the deal, though it won’t be official until tomorrow. Villarreal supporters have to be excited with this signing, as with Eres Unal’s—now to see if these two young stars, both of whom had breakout seasons last year in other leagues, can quickly adapt to La Liga. We are betting that they will!
