Andrés Fernández: Villarreal has to make a decision soon

He wants to come here, we want him, it should happen.

EPM reports today that Villarreal have until mid-June to make a decision about signing Andrés Fernández permanently. We have a purchase option of €2m, which is not much; the main sticking point would appear to be Andrés’s salary, which he seems to be willing to renegotiate.

Andrés got off to a rocky start with Villarreal: his form in our Europa League group matches was relatively poor. When he started playing regularly in the league, he mostly did very well, with outstanding performances against Atletico Madrid and Valencia in particular. He is going to make some errors or have subpar matches (Eibar, Real Madrid) but his outstanding games are really outstanding.

(Overall, his WhoScored rating was the same as Asenjo’s).

It’s a reasonably low-cost option given that Andrés would certainly be first choice until Asenjo is available. Andrés’s existing contract with Porto runs until 2019; presumably we would need to extend that a year or so?
