After a scoreless first half, Villarreal brushed aside Las Palmas 4-0 at the Ceramica to move to fifth place in the league table, pending later results today and tomorrow.
Cedric Bakambu, as might be expected, opened the scoring in the 48th minute, with an assist from Samu Castillejo; Mario Gaspar notched a second in the 65th minute and then two minutes later his cross was bundled past his own goalkeeper by defender Navarro. The result was already a bit hard on the visitors, and their misery was completed in injury time as Nicola Sansone scored from an assist by Denis Cheryshev.
It was a surprisingly open, entertaining match given how dull Spanish noontime kickoffs often can be; possession was about 50-50, both teams completed about 85% of their passes, and there were shots galore—Villarreal had 22 (11 on target) and Las Palmas 13 (5 on target).
Carlos Bacca certainly deserved a goal today, hitting the bar and could have earned a penalty in the first half with a little luck. Only real negative was Alvaro Gonzalez coming off after 55 minutes with a knock.
Las Palmas had some chances to score too, Viera with the best of them, but Mariano Barbosa made some fine stops.
Here are the first three goals, anyway:
Our next match is in the Copa at Ponferradina on Wednesday, expect some rotations there before the visit to Atleti’s new stadium on Saturday. Endavant!
