Villarreal go top of Europa League group with tepid draw in Bucharest

Bucharest's national stadium may look beautiful, but the bumpy pitch didn't produce much beautiful football.

Villarreal are currently top of Group L after a 1-1 draw with Steaua Bucharest.  Villarreal took the lead in the ninth minute with a goal from Santos Borré, but Andrés Fernandez fumbled a Steaua corner kick to Sulley Muniru who gleefully leveled the score.

This was much against the run of play, but as has been true of late, Villarreal didn't put together two good halves.  Steaua's William hit the crossbar which was as close as anyone got to breaking the deadlock.

Best news for Villarreal is that they got some playing time for Cedric Bakambu (sub in 82nd minute) and a lineup with a lot of changes from last week's Osasuna match and, presumably, next Sunday's Espanyol match.

Zurich defeated Osmanlispor in the other match in our group, 2-1, so three teams on three points, Villarreal on four.
