Villarreal are set to start their European campaign at home against FC Zurich at El Madrigal.
Following their away victory against Málaga, things have slowly improved for Fran Escribá’s side after the initial turmoil at start of the season.
Players like Borré, Sansone and Soriano have finally attuned to the dynamic of the team. Manu Trigueros continues to act as the anchor of the team in spite of Bruno’s stagnant start of the season.
Zurich should not pose much of a threat having suffered relegation to the second division in Switzerland and having sold most of their standouts players. However, Villarreal should not get overly comfortable about their Swiss opponents. Zurich’s main objective is to achieve promotion and they are currently leading the table having won their last 6 matches.
There’s a precedent between both clubs during the 2014-15 Europa League season.
Villarreal won 4-1 at El Madrigal and lost 3-2 in Zurich during the group stages of the aforementioned season.
I would expect Escribá to make some rotations for the encounter. I’m most certain that Álvaro González will be making his debut for Villarreal tomorrow against Zurich. Additionally, I’m expecting Jona and Cheryshev to start the game.
Villarreal squad news:
Alexandre Pato and Bonera are back from their ailing injuries. Bakambu and Soldado are obviously still out. I don’t see Escribá lining up Pato or Bonera since their both returning from injury.
