It’s Europa League again: Villarreal meekly fall to Monaco

A 1-0 loss on the night and 3-1 loss on aggregate push Villarreal into the familiar Europa League group stage

No Champions League riches for the Yellow Submarine after Monaco win 1-0, 3-1 on aggregate, to send Villarreal to the Europa League and much smaller money on offer.

Villarreal huffed and puffed, but couldn’t get a goal to put any real pressure on Monaco. Santos Borré fluffed a one-on-one late in the first half that was our best chance, and the referee, while denying Villarreal what looked like a clear penalty for handball in the area, awarded one to Monaco late on to just put another nail in Villarreal’s CL coffin.

Hard to say much about this inasmuch as Escribá is still learning who he has and how they play, the injury list is still long, and so forth, but nothing much happened today to generate any optimism.

Bakambu needs to get well, Pato needs to get fit, and we need to get Roberto Soriano and Sansone integrated into the squad ASAP.

Next match is Sunday vs. Sevilla in El Madrigal. A guanyar!!
