After the season turmoil with all the changes, injuries, and now the negative result in the Champions League against Monaco, it is not a secret that Villarreal need to bring another central defender to cope with the challenges of the season.

The latest rumor courtesy of Gianluca DiMarzio suggest that Villarreal are considering making a bid for Palermo and Costa Rica defender Giancarlo González. It has been reported than González wants to leave the Rosanero, with several clubs listed as his future destination.

Palermo’s sport director Rino Foschi confirmed last month that González wants to move to a team with higher aspirations and that the club is willing to sell him shall an offer were to arrive.

It’s difficult to make a true assessment about this rumor but hey, DiMarzio has been on point with the rumors of players being linked to Villarreal such as Roberto Soriano and Nicola Sansone.

I can see Giancarlo González being a shrewd signing for Villarreal. He has helped Palermo avoid relegation twice after being promoted in 2014. Among González accomplishments has been his recognition as one of the best defenders during the 2014 World Cup in Brazil by the BBC, as Costa Rica finished as one of the revelations of the tournament precisely for their remarkable defensive work.

Palermo recently signed Serbian defender Slobodan Rajković. Additionally, González was on the bench in Palermo’s most recent match in the Coppa Italia while Rajković was a starter.
