Both Villarreal men and ladies teams have been invited by host Deportivo la Coruña to participate in this year's edition of the Teresa Herrera Trophy in a one off match at Riazor Stadium on August 9th.
The Teresa Herrera Trophy is one of the oldest and most prestigious summer friendlies tournaments in Spain and worldwide because of the magnitude of such international teams that have played the tournament throughout its history such as Pele's Santos and Garrincha's Botafogo among others.
The tournament originally commenced in 1946 as a means to raise money for the poor of the city of A Coruña in Galicia, the trophy is named in honour of an 18th-century local woman who was famed for her work with the region's poor.
Deportivo de la Coruña (19) hold the most titles, followed by Real Madrid CF (9), Atlético de Madrid (6), FC Barcelona (5) and Sevilla (4).
