Our sister blog Into The Calderon has an assessment of Luciano Vietto's season so far, and it's not good. (Believe me, anytime you're mentioned in the same article with the words "perhaps Getafe will find a present on its front door", it's NOT GOOD.)
Marcelino said at the time he thought Vietto should have stayed with us at least one more season. €20m was a lot for Atleti to fork out for one season's worth of performance in La Liga, but Vietto wanted to go join Cholo and Villarreal couldn't really stand in his way, or complain about the profit they were making.
But all joking aside, what does happen next year? Borja Baston is certainly going to return from his loan spell with Eibar--he's only got 40 goals in the last two years on loan, first with Zaragoza, then with the Basques. Griezmann has been incredible. Ángel Correa seems to have seized his chance with some success--Vietto hasn't.
Is he ill-suited for Atleti's style of play--a square peg in a round hole, maybe? Or Is this just a "sophomore jinx"?
Villarreal got Vietto after clubs were scared away by a poor second season at Racing Club. Now he's had a big drop from 20 goals for Villarreal (8 in Europa, 12 in la Liga) to three in all competitions for Atleti. He could well be an odd man out next year--would we be interested in taking him back on loan, or would Atleti even be interested in doing that? What do you think?
