Villarreal sweep aside Celta, 5-0

So much for that close match I told everyone to expect.

Fran Escriba’s Villarreal hit full stride today with a 5-0 demolishing of Celta Vigo. Roberto Soriano scored two fine goals four minutes apart—the first in the eighth minute after receiving a world-class pass from Manu Trigueros to split the Celta defense, the second a brilliant chip in to the top corner after intercepting a clearance from the Celta keeper.

Celta briefly threatened to make a game of it, moving Wass up alongside Aspas to more of a 4-4-2, but Cedric Bakambu, making his first start since our trip to Anfield, scored his first goal of the season before halftime, running onto a perfect pass from Sansone.

HT Villarreal 3-0 Celta

The visitors needed a goal of their own to have any chance, and it didn’t happen. Villarreal started on the front foot once again and three minutes into the half won a corner—and Daniel Wass put it into his own net. After that the remaining half was pretty much a fiesta for Villarreal, as Celta had very little opportunity to threaten the Submarine goal.

The big moment of the second half was probably Giuseppe Rossi’s entry into the match at the hour mark. A questionable offside shortly after kept him from breaking in on Asenjo, unfortunately—I think the fans would have enjoyed seeing that.

Sergio Gomez got his marching orders for a second yellow on the stroke of normal time, and Villarreal added a fifth goal in injury time, Mario’s cross being headed against the post by Pato and rebounding to Trigueros, who fired it home.

FT Villarreal 5-0 Celta

Villarreal were tremendous; as Celta coach Berizzo noted, three of our goals came from Celta errors—apart from the own goal, we were clinical in taking advantage of Celta mistakes.

Stats: Possession Villarreal 45-55 Celta

Finally, everyone was happy to see Rodri (Rodrigo) get into the match as a sub for Bruno with 10 minutes left, he looked great. Endavant!!!
