Villarreal conceded an early goal to Espanyol but roared back with three scores in the last 25 minutes to overwhelm Espanyol before 17,000+ fans in El Madrigal.
Espanyol's goal came courtesy of a Gerard Moreno through ball to Felipe Caicedo, who rounded Alphonse Areola and scored in the fifth minute. The goal came while Villarreal was a center back down--Victor Ruiz receiving treatment for a cut on his forehead--and his temporary replacement, Tomas Pina, was trying to cover the Ecuadorian.
It wasn't until the last half-hour that either side really threatened again; in the 61st minute a long cross-field pass was nicely controlled by Gerard Moreno, but Alphonse Areola cut down the angle and saved the shot. Roberto Soldado scored with a lovely chip (assist by Samu Garcia) to make it 1-1 in the 67th minute. 20 minutes later a Soldado through ball found Bakambu and he scored from a tight angle, and the ex-Bursaspor man wasn't done yet, adding a second (Soldado assisting again) in the third minute of injury time.
